A post on r/Frugal_Ind blew up this week: 1,396 upvotes and 555 comments from people saying the soap they trusted for years has gone downhill. Fragrance diluted, bars melting faster, and for some, itching that was never there before.

We read every reply worth reading. Here is what Indian shoppers actually recommend, with today's prices so you can compare like for like.

First: the number on the wrapper that tells you more than the brand

Every soap sold in India has to print its TFM (Total Fatty Matter) percentage and grade on the pack. TFM is the share of actual soap-making fats in the bar. Higher TFM usually means a milder bar that lasts longer, and a lower one means more fillers.

  • Grade 1 is the top grade. Look for it before you look at the fragrance.
  • In the thread, people point out that Mysore Sandal prints 80% TFM, and someone who says they work at the Godrej Cinthol factory names Cinthol as one of the highest-TFM bars that is still good quality.

Turn the pack over in the shop. It takes five seconds.

Sensitive or itchy skin: go pH-balanced

Most regular bars are alkaline. If you itch after a bath, a pH-balanced bar or a "syndet" (soap-free cleansing bar) is the usual fix. These cost more per 100 g, so use them where it matters.

1. Sebamed Baby Cleansing Bar

₹293 for 100 g · 4.4★ from 40,473 ratings on Flipkart · labelled pH 5.5, soap-free

"Use sebamed, bought for the baby. But now everyone in the family uses it." (r/Frugal_Ind, +46)

The priciest pick here, and the one people stick with once they try it. See on Flipkart

2. Chicco Baby Moments Soap

₹42 per 100 g in the 8 x 125 g pack (₹423) · 4.5★ from 138 ratings · smaller packs from ₹270

"I've switched hers to Chicco - slightly lower quality with good pH balance and also lasts longer." (+100)

The value pick for a gentle bar. The bigger pack is the cheaper way to buy it. See on Flipkart

3. Cetaphil Cleansing & Moisturizing Syndet Bar

₹158 per 100 g in the 4-pack (₹632) · 4.3★ from 14,568 ratings

"I use a syndet bar cuz I live in a place with hard water. Earlier used Cetaphil but now I just look for syndet bars on pharmeasy/netmeds/apollo." (+68)

Good for hard water and eczema-prone skin. Pharmacy apps often stock cheaper syndet bars from smaller makers; check the ingredient list says "syndet" or "soap-free". See on Flipkart

Everyday bars that still hold up (high TFM, low price)

4. Cinthol Original

₹46 per 100 g (4 x 150 g for ₹279) · 4.4★ from 20,196 ratings

The factory-worker recommendation from the thread. Cheap, and a high-TFM bar. See on Flipkart

5. Mysore Sandal Soap

₹49 per 100 g (3 x 150 g for ₹220) · 4.4★ from 8,099 ratings · 80% TFM printed on the pack

The original complaint was about this bar, so check the batch: if it irritates you, switch. Many in the thread still swear by it. See on Flipkart

6. Medimix Classic (18 herbs)

₹34 per 100 g (6 x 125 g for ₹252) · 4.4★ from 4,011 ratings

Split opinion: "Used it for years, never had any reaction" (+38) versus "skin feels real dry" (+17). Try one bar before buying a 6-pack. See on Flipkart

What people said to skip

  • Indian-made Dove: "greasy" and "dissolves like cotton candy" came up again and again (+61). The UK/EU version gets better reviews, but imports cost many times more.
  • Imported "luxury" bars on Amazon: a 150 g French soap listed at around ₹8,000. Import duty does not explain that markup.
